You may know Nicalis as an independent game publisher, but we're so much more! We're also a game developer.
What began as a cool way to unite more players to more developers and games has grown into a cooler way to unite even more players to even more games on even more platforms. We've spent the last few years developing technology (a fancy word for our multiple game engines and tools) that allows us to handle all game publishing and development internally.
That doesn't mean we don't or won't publish a game in which we're not handling porting, testing and general development. Occasionally, we do publish games which we don't re-development, but mostly we focus on doing all the heavy lifting for other developers.
Unlike other publishers, we don't normally outsource development duties; it all stays in the confines of Nicalis HQ. We have our own tech and internal development team to tackle literally everything from programming, art, design, music and production. Aside from strictly porting, we've also recreated games originally designed/developed in game-making tools such as Multimedia Fusion 2, IG Maker and even Flash/ActionScript 2.0.
What does this all mean to the game creator? Well, to our partners it means less work and more time to focus on the next game. We take great pride in taking a great game and presenting it to a whole new world.
Our proprietary engine currently powers everything from The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth to Cave Story+, NightSky, VVVVVV and 1001 Spikes. And that same engine runs on: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, Windows, Linux, OSX and iOS--all of which we're licensed to develop and publish for!
Beyond that, we spend a great deal of time and effort promoting the games we work on to the world. We love what we do so it makes trying our best much easier!
